General Manager

Location: 5258 River Rd. Bethesda, MD

American Plant, a dynamic, urban garden center and lifestyle boutique, is seeking a General Manager to lead overall store operations at our Bethesda Chevy Chase retail location. The General Manager is responsible for offering an exemplary and unique personal shopping experience to our clients. We are looking for an individual with an upbeat, positive attitude and a proven leader in the field of customer service and store management.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Model exemplary service and ensure managers perform effective floor supervision to drive sales while maintaining exceptional customer service and visual presentation.
  • Recognize and motivate associates to build loyal customer relationships.
  • Build positive working relationships with store team.
  • Train and motivate all associates through on-going programs in sales, customer service and product knowledge.
  • Maximize team and individual performance through consistent coaching and feedback using performance management processes.
  • Communicate openly to create an environment where all associates are treated fairly and with dignity and respect.
  • Forecast and adjust monthly payroll to maximize productivity, achieve sales/payroll goals and complete workload.
  • Develop and execute strategy to drive sales and build customer loyalty through store programs.
  • Assess store metrics and associate behaviors to identify strengths and opportunities to maximize store results.
  • Plan and delegate key initiatives. Collaborate with team to anticipate challenges and re-assess changing.
  • Work with department managers to establish the inventory levels for the store.
  • Oversee general maintenance of location buildings and structures
  • Protect company assets and minimize loss by ensuring all store standards and operating procedures are met including; workplace safety, risk management, merchandise management, and loss prevention.

Qualifications include:

  • College degree preferred or equivalent job experience.
  • 4 + years management experience in specialty retail and/or multi-unit retail business environment.
  • Strong initiative and leadership skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to build effective teams and motivate employees.
  • Willingness to set and maintain high standards of performance.
  • Ability to give clear directions and set expectations for staff.
  • American Plant product use/knowledge.
  • Knowledge of effective merchandise presentation standards.
  • Understanding of basic retail concepts (gross profit margin, markdowns).
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Proficiency using Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and POS systems.
  • Ability to be mobile on the sales floor for extended periods of time.
  • Availability to work flexible schedule, including weekends and holidays.
  • Ability to work indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to lift and mobilize medium to large items, while utilizing appropriate equipment and safety techniques.

Decor Manager

American Plant, a third generation, locally owned garden center and lifestyle boutique, is seeking a Home Décor Manager. The home décor manager is responsible for offering an exemplary and unique personal shopping experience to our clients. We are looking for an individual with an upbeat, positive attitude and a proven leader in the field of customer service.

The Home Décor Manager’s duties include:

  • Providing an exceptional experience for our customers;
  • Sharing the knowledge and experience of unique products with our customers in guiding them towards merchandise that will meet their needs and their unique personal style;
  • Selecting and buying merchandise in a product class to meet and exceed our customers expectations;
  • Ability to conceptually plan assortments that meet financial objectives;
  • Managing a department with $1.5 million in yearly sales,
  • Maintaining a clean and organized department;
  • Delegating and directing a team of 3-5 employees;
  • Creating visually appealing displays and cross merchandising;
  • Pricing, stocking and maintaining home décor merchandise.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Experience working in retail home décor sales;
  • Knowledge of home décor trends;
  • Creativity in merchandising and design in a retail setting.

Demonstrated experience as a retail manager is preferred. Must be able to work one weekend day.
